Job Summary

The Abbotsford Arts Council is pleased to provide the opportunity for a practicum student to gain experience working as a gallery assistant at the Kariton Art Gallery. The Kariton produces a new exhibition every month, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to see multiple exhibitions through from curation to installation.

This project is ideal for a student with an interest in fine arts and arts administration. This position requires someone with strong written and verbal communication skills, has meticulous attention to detail, and who is passionate about stimulating arts engagement in Abbotsford’s communities.

Learning Objectives


As a Gallery Assistant, the successful candidate will learn to:

● Evaluate artist submissions and lead the curation of at least one multi-artist themed exhibition.

● Catalogue incoming submissions to both the gallery and gift shop, learning how to appropriately and accurately manage the details of large numbers of participating artists.

● Handle artwork, install, and break down exhibitions.

● Prepare marketing materials, (product photos, video, exhibition descriptions) for distribution by communications staff.

● Prepare post-exhibition/event documentation for grant reporting.

● Assist with the preparation and hosting of artist events, including monthly exhibition openings and occasional workshops.

● Assist with the day to day operations of a community not-for-profit gallery.


CANDIDATE: You will gain exposure to a variety of business models and professional practices, build creative network, and build confidence in hosting and development of your own multi-artist events.
