Education & Public Programming (Oral Histories & Storytelling) (Fall 2024)

The Reach Gallery Museum is the only professionally operated public gallery in the Fraser Valley. As a key support person for our weekly C3 program, the practicum student will work with Reach staff and facilitators to transcribe, summarize, and document oral storytelling and personal histories of older adults in our community. During the program, the student will transcribe participant stories and work one-on-one with seniors to review and approve their recorded family histories. Artwork produced in the program will be documented and tracked by the student, with the final program outcome being the publication of the stories and artworks in a book for our program participants. The publication will also be included in our local history archive.

Students will: 

• Become familiar with the range of careers available in the gallery/museum sector and develop an understanding of the competencies and skills required in the field; 

• Become familiar with educational program theory, design, and methodology in the gallery and museum context; 

• Build interpersonal and skills through one-on-one interviews and interactions with program participants 

• Develop documentation and digital design skills through the compilation of recorded content for inclusion into a publication 

  
  

Candidate: This position is ideal for an individual with a passion for local history and archival research. It would be suited to a student seeking experience with interviews, writing and transcription. If you have an added interest in digital design, then this practicum will incorporate the student's skill/experience in creative design.
